AI labels on photos?

Suggestions and site feedback

As you probably know, we already have a policy on Spandex Party that fully AI-generated images are not allowed. However, AI-enhanced photos that involve smaller edits or improvements are generally tolerated. I am now considering introducing a small "AI Enhanced" label for photos that appear to have been edited using AI. This will keep things real and might deter more users from enhancing it via AI because of the labeling. There are now quite a few technologies available that can help detect AI-generated or AI-enhanced images. What's particularly interesting is that some of these can run entirely on our own servers, meaning we wouldn't need to share or upload your photos to external AI providers or large tech companies. Privacy would remain a priority. Of course, AI detection isn't perfect, and false positives are something we'd need to be very careful about. The goal wouldn't be to ban AI-enhanced photos, but simply to provide more transparency for everyone. Nothing has been decided yet. I'm still exploring the possibilities and would really like to hear what the community thinks before moving forward.

If the goal is to deter people from using AI to falsely enhance their photos, why not just prevent AI pics from being uploaded altogether?

The goal isn't really to prevent people from using AI to enhance their photos. Minor AI enhancements are generally tolerated under our current policy. However, fully AI-generated images are not allowed, and that policy will remain in place. The problem with automatically blocking uploads is that AI detection isn't 100% reliable and it would turn into a witch hunt. We could end up rejecting perfectly legitimate photos simply because a detection model got it wrong. That's why I'm considering a label instead. It could provide more transparency without unfairly blocking photos or restricting how people edit them. This doesn't mean AI-generated images would suddenly become acceptable. They would still violate our rules. The label would simply help identify photos that may have been enhanced using AI. And of course, the question is whether the community would actually find such a label useful. That's exactly why I'm asking for feedback before making any decisions. đź’Ş

Then I suppose it would be useful to know who is "enhancing" their photos. Maybe I am a traditionalist, but I don't see the allure of an AI-edited photo here. It's inherently dishonest.

We need to define what "enhancing" means. For me it doesn't mean to make the bulge bigger or make the body more muscular. I'd say that's generative. In some cases it's background removal, or remove identifiable characteristics, like tattoos and other characteristics. For all those things I think it's a great tool to keep one's or others' privacy without distorting the actual image. I'm open to hear what you think about this and what you understand under 'AI enhancement' and 'AI generation'.

Sorry, I was under the impression that AI "enhancement" was not simply a removal of identifiers and more true to its definition of making it seem better: E.g. bulge enlargement, muscle definition, or skin-smoothing etc. "An enhancement is an action, process, or change that improves the quality, value, power, or attractiveness of something." (ironically, from AI)

Yes. I’m for the labeling for sure even if not 100% foolproof.

Ah ok, I shouldn't have used "AI Enhancement" as the term for what I meant. Thanks for following-up on this so we're all on the same page.

I’m in favour of enabling content and users of the platform to be kept honest. We can be honest in tagging something manipulated/enhanced/tuned and still celebrate its beauty, as with something totally untouched.
