Creating a new room in chat

Hi, I wasn't sure which section of the forum to post this in, but I wanted to know anybody has created their own room in chat? If, so could you tell me how they work and if it's worth doing. I was thinking of setting one but I'm not sure if it's just private or through invite only. Thanks guys.
