Hello kinksters! Wondering if any of you have some hacks or tips and tricks to washing spandex and drying it? I know the “typical” way, wash similar and Cold and air dry….but does anyone have any other way to do this to save some time? Many thanks!

I don't know of a "quick" way other than using the delicate wash setting on your machine making sure you use a gentle soap and cool/cold water. The spin cycle after the final rinse should remove any excess water. From there, hang the item up (if possible) and let it air dry. The polyurethane fiber in lycra spandex will degrade when exposed to high heat, so DO NOT put your garments in the dryer.

Make sure and use a detergent with enzymes (I know Tide for sure has them). It helps break down protein-based stains. And make sure to not wash spandex with anything that has velcro. If an item gets pit odors, add a half cup or so of vinegar to the rinse cycle (put it in the liquid softener  dispenser). Never use liquid softener with athletic fabrics.

TY, the "protein" tip is crucial!! Thanks much! I have a new leotard tank top and thigh highs that need washing as they are brand new and have more coming soon!

Not quick, safest way is to hand wash with brief delicate soap, wring softly and let air dry

And even hand washing, be careful of mixing colors. A red can bleed into white as example.

Exactly. I've always come down on the side of caution and washed orange, red, and maroon items on their own. It just isn't worth taking the chance.

Never use mild detergent/washing agent for delicate fabrics. Gear of lower quality can start to bleed out with those, even though if it has been washed many times before. Same goes for some hand wash detergents.

For quick washes, you can always hand-wash in the sink.  But in general, I was with tide (fragrance free), a scoop of oxyclean, and a bit of downy rinse & refresh (fragrance free). I put that all into the drum with cold water, and wash on the gentle cycle. Then air dry. Thar combo will get out practically anything.

Cool ty! Do you put them inside a garment bag of with something soft, like a pillowcase?

I will do that if there's other items in the wash, or if anything has a zipper. Otherwise, I do not.

If I'm machine washing I'll also do the sensitive detergent, I just throw suits in a mesh laundry bag before starting to prevent them from getting caught under the central agitator (if you have a top load washer). I only air dry, but I have friends who use a dryer cycle on low who tell me they haven't had any issues, ymmv. This has worked well for multiple suits like my leohex, amoresy, hirogato, and some dye sublimated printed patterns.

I always step in the shower with my short spandex and wash it as I shower. It’s kinky, and it’s good for the spandex; for example, I bought those in 2005, and they are still doing well (and the cut is perfect: they’re not that stretchy, yet they show the package perfectly well)… The long go in the gentle cycle with as much water as possible…

My problem is the zippers on my suits. Even if I put them in a fabric bag the zippers scratch the satin fabric. Has anyone found a workaround for that?

I pour a small amount of Woolite into a Tupperware container and fill it with cold water when I first get into the shower. I wash my underwear in the water and let it sit while I'm taking my shower. After my shower I rinse the underwear out with coldish water and hang it in the shower to dry.  Be careful with colors. I recently got a pair of bright pink bikini underwear and it's still turning the water pink even after 10 washings. This was inexpensive underwear from China and had nothing to do with the Woolite. I usually let whites sit in the soapy water for a day to brighten them. I try to do wash every day so I don't have to worry about mixing colors.

Are you zipping it up before washing?
