I've been thinking about something for a long time:
Why is leather accepted as a kink, latex has an established community, sneakers have a recognized fetish scene... but spandex is often treated like it's "just workout clothes"?
The more I thought about it, the more I realized the question isn't whether spandex deserves a place in the kink community. The community has already existed for decades.
People have built friendships around it.
They've collected gear.
They've traveled to meet each other.
They've created websites, forums, podcasts, events, and photography around it.
Some love cycling kits. Others are into wrestling singlets, zentai, speedos, running tights, dancewear, or superhero suits. Some are attracted to the fabric itself, while others love the confidence, transformation, or identity that comes from wearing it.
That sounds a lot like every other gear-based kink community.
So I decided to write the most in-depth article I've ever written on the subject.
It explores:
The origins of the spandex community.
Why Lycra became more than just athletic wear.
The psychology behind the attraction.
The many different types of gear and enthusiasts.
Why some people feel the community is misunderstood—even within broader kink spaces.
Why I believe spandex already has a legitimate place alongside other recognized gear fetishes.
Whether you agree or disagree, I'd genuinely love to hear your perspective.
When did you first realize spandex was more than just clothing for you?
And if you're not part of the community, what has your impression of it been?
I'd love for this to become a real discussion.
