Why Spandex Already Belongs in the Kink Community

I've been thinking about something for a long time: Why is leather accepted as a kink, latex has an established community, sneakers have a recognized fetish scene... but spandex is often treated like it's "just workout clothes"? The more I thought about it, the more I realized the question isn't whether spandex deserves a place in the kink community. The community has already existed for decades. People have built friendships around it. They've collected gear. They've traveled to meet each other. They've created websites, forums, podcasts, events, and photography around it. Some love cycling kits. Others are into wrestling singlets, zentai, speedos, running tights, dancewear, or superhero suits. Some are attracted to the fabric itself, while others love the confidence, transformation, or identity that comes from wearing it. That sounds a lot like every other gear-based kink community. So I decided to write the most in-depth article I've ever written on the subject. It explores: The origins of the spandex community. Why Lycra became more than just athletic wear. The psychology behind the attraction. The many different types of gear and enthusiasts. Why some people feel the community is misunderstood—even within broader kink spaces. Why I believe spandex already has a legitimate place alongside other recognized gear fetishes. Whether you agree or disagree, I'd genuinely love to hear your perspective. When did you first realize spandex was more than just clothing for you? And if you're not part of the community, what has your impression of it been? I'd love for this to become a real discussion. 🔗 https://www.stretchingthetruthpodcast.com/177-2/

I think it's partly because leather and latex are not things you ordinarily see people wear out and about. It's worn very specifically for sexual gratification and sex play. You don't usually see people walking around in leather and latex gear. On the other hand, things like leggings and spandex Under Armour t-shirts are ordinary clothing you commonly see people wearing out and about, or at very least to the gym and for active pursuits. Cycling gear is commonly seen. Speedos, while not common, are still worn in public on certain beaches, and like for swim team or lap swimming. I think that's why superhero spandex is seen more as a fetish or cosplay thing, again, because you're never going to see people wearing that out in public, except maybe at Pride or some other special event. I realized really young, like single digit age, that spandex turned me on. Getting a boner the first time I tried on a speedo for swim team. I wasn't even old enough to have true sexual arousal; it was just the pleasurable sensation it gave me, and how it looked, seeing myself in the mirror. I've done a lot of reading about it, and fetishes and kinks usually take root between the ages of 5 and 10, before we even have sexual awareness. That's also clear from reading the "Spandex Beginnings" in user profiles on this site, where many if not most discovered their attraction to spandex at a very young age. It starts from something we see or hear or feel or experience, and we begin to slowly explore and discover as we reach the age of sexual awareness and beyond. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/standard-deviations/201805/growing-up-kinky-research-shows-how-kink-identity-is-formed

Definitely.  I was 8 when I got my first jammer and never looked back since at any other kind of swimwear, and obsessed with lycra shorts ever since

I think a lot of people, even a wide segment of gay men, view spandex as simply something workout gear and swimwear are made of. And I would daresay that if a lot of them were truthful, they associate the material with women's athletic gear and swimwear. And I believe those people see it as something "feminine" and akin to cross-dressing.  Leather and rubber can be skintight and hug the body exactly the same way spandex does, but leather and rubber have also had decades (going back to at least the 1960s) to build up an international fetish following. Spandex was only really becoming more widely used in clothing during my childhood years in the 1970s. By the early and mid 1980s, it really took off. Especially the fluorescent spandex.  I was probably aware around the age of 7 that silky, skintight material held an incredible attraction for me. It was certainly well before I ever understood anything about orgasms or sex.

SPandex for me is by far my No 1. fetish and i didn´t even know it until somewhat recently, which is crazy. I thought my biggest fetish was underwear, i just thought i had a tight boxer brief fetish leaning into ones longer on the leg, quickly i was gravitating towards compressionshorts and worked out they drive me wild lol, literaly loved them but i saw it as an underwear fetish. At the same time i thought i had a wrestling singlet fetish and a running leggings fetish and bulge worship fetish fetish. Kind of on me for not putting the dots together at that point haha  I think it´s cus i hang out in kink spaces where everything was rubber or leather etc so there was no representation. I think it might of been this site that gave me that realisation that that itch i couldnt quite scratch / work out, was that i was really into spandex and didnt even realise it! funnily enough i remember seeing rubber events and being like... that´s... almost..  what i like! For me as well, spandex just makes me feel masculine and sexy and if i could wear it all the time, everywhere i would! No idea where it came from like the other guys here, always loved the sportsy look, sports gear in general is a bit fetish for me but spandex takes the crown!
