Everybody is different and there's no right or wrong answer, but for me, I went slowly, though it was made easier because I was in sports - swimming and running, where wearing something spandex was just a part of it. Then wearing it at home, to the gym, and for other activities like hiking and rollerblading where spandex might not be mainstream, but it wasn't unusual either. Then, stopping on errands going to and from my activities, still wearing my spandex. Eventually, getting to be ok with wearing it casually, out and about, like I would wear shorts or jeans or track pants, to places where it was appropriate, like errands or going on walks or hanging out on beach boardwalks, etc.
I don't usually wear spandex openly to school or work or social events or dates, or anywhere it would just be weird or inappropriate or would make people feel uncomfortable. I've just never been the kind of person who says I gotta be me and fuck everybody else and whatever they think.
Good luck on your journey and have fun! You've come to a great place full of kind, understanding, and supportive guys who went or are going through or are considering the same thing.
ETA: As anxious and self-conscious as you may feel sometimes wearing your spandex out and about, what you're eventually going to realize is that most people aren't going to give you a single thought or second glance. They simply don't care. Probably the hardest part of your journey is going to be getting your head to that point.
